Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Download & Install Tobii Driver

This driver allows your computer to communicate with the eye tracker.

1. Download the Driver:

  • Go to: gaming.tobii.com/getstarted
  • Under "1. Select the hardware", choose "Tobii" (Eye Tracking)
  • Under "2. Select Tobii device", choose "Tobii Eye Tracker 5"
  • Click "DOWNLOAD DRIVER"

2. Install the Driver:

  • Find the downloaded file: Tobii.EyeTracker5.Offline.Installer_4.183.0.30025
  • Right-click the file Select "Run as administrator"
  • Follow the installation prompts, click "Next" until finished
  • The installer will also install Tobii Experience Software

Connect Tobii Eye Tracker 5

  • Attach the Eye Tracker 5 to the bottom center of your monitor using the magnetic mount or double-sided tape
  • Plug the Eye Tracker 5 into a USB port on your computer

Setup Tobii Experience App

This app calibrates your eyes for tracking:

1. Open the App:

  • Click the Start Button
  • Type: Tobii Experience
  • Open the app
  • If not found: Open Microsoft Store, search "Tobii Experience", and install it

2. Display Setup:

  • Click "Set up display" button
  • Align the on-screen lines to the physical marks on top of your eye tracker
  • Click "Done" when aligned

3. Calibrate:

  • Click "Improve calibration" button
  • Follow the dots on screen with EYES ONLY — keep your head still
  • Look at each dot until it disappears
  • Save your calibration profile when complete

About Tobii Experience: Use this app to improve calibration, recalibrate whenever needed, change profiles, and re-run Display Setup if you move the tracker.

Verify Installation

After installation, check that all required software is installed:

  • Open SettingsApps & Features
  • Search for Tobii
  • You should see 3 apps:
    • Tobii Experience (the app from Microsoft Store)
    • Tobii Experience Software For Windows
    • Tobii Experience Software For Windows (EyeTracker5) — the driver

Install OptiKey

OptiKey is the actual software used for communication.

Do NOT download Version 4. It will NOT work with Tobii Eye Tracker 5.
You MUST use Version 3 (OptiKey Classic).

1. Download:

  • Go to: optikey.org/help/versions
  • Scroll down to find the "OptiKey Classic (V3)" section
  • Click: "Download OptiKey Pro Classic (v3.2.5)"

2. Run the Installer:

  • Find the downloaded file: OptiKeySetup-3.2.5-Pro.exe
  • Right-click"Run as administrator"
  • The Setup Wizard will start

3. Select Eye Tracker:

  • When prompted, select "Tobii Eye Tracker 5" from the dropdown
  • This configures OptiKey to work with your device

  • Click "Install" to begin the installation
  • Wait for the installation to complete

Use OptiKey for Eye Tracker 5

1. Open OptiKey:

  • Launch the program from the Start Menu
  • The OptiKey keyboard will open on your screen

2. Test & Verify:

  • The keyboard should show "Pointing: Tobii Eye Tracker 5" in the info panel
  • Look at keys to type — your gaze controls the cursor
  • Try typing a message to test the eye tracking

Tips & Settings:
  • Recalibrate: Click "RE-CALIBRATE" button on OptiKey keyboard (bottom-left)
  • Dwell Time: Adjust in Settings → Pointing & Selecting

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Remove Old Tobii Files (Clean Start)

Before installing the beta driver, remove old or conflicting Tobii files to ensure a clean installation:

1. Check Apps & Features → search "Tobii"

  • if no Tobii software or driver found, proceed to Step 2
  • If found, uninstall ALL entries:
    • Tobii Experience Software
    • Tobii Eye Tracker 5 Drivers
    • Tobii Service
    • Any other Tobii entries

2. Restart Computer

  • Restart after uninstalling all Tobii software
  • This ensures all services are fully stopped

  • Download the beta driver from: TousLesDrivers (warning: This is NOT an official Tobii download)
  • File name: Tobii.EyeTracker5.Offline.Installer_5.0.0.6035.exe
  • File size: 5.3 MB
  • Right-click the installer and select "Run as Administrator"

Verify Installation in Apps & Features

After installation completes, verify the driver was installed:

  • Open SettingsApps & Features
  • Search for "tobii" again
  • You should now see: "Tobii Device Drivers For Windows (EyeTracker5)"

Connect Tobii Eye Tracker 5

  • Attach the Eye Tracker 5 to the bottom center of your monitor using the magnetic mount or double-sided tape
  • Plug the Eye Tracker 5 into a USB port on your computer

Display Setup & Calibration in Tobii app

1. Launch Tobii Experience & Set Up Display:

  • Launch Tobii Experience from Start Menu (auto-installed from Microsoft Store)
  • Click "Set up display" button when prompted
  • Align the on-screen lines to the physical marks on top of your eye tracker

2. Run Calibration:

  • Position yourself within the tracking zone (45-95 cm from screen)
  • Click "Improve calibration" in Tobii Experience
  • Adjust the screen angle or slightly elevate PALS bed until the two white dots are visible in the center
  • Calibration - Follow the dots with your eyes
  • Follow dots on screen with EYES ONLY — do not move your head
  • Look at each dot until it disappears

Enable Windows Eye Control

Navigate to Windows Eye Control Settings:

  • Open SettingsEase of Access (or Accessibility in Windows 11)
  • Select Eye Control from the left menu (under "Vision" section)
  • Toggle "Turn on eye control (EN-US keyboard layout only)" to ON
  • RESTART your computer if windows eye control doesn't work
  • After restart, Eye Control should recognize the tracker
  • The Eye Control launchpad (toolbar) will appear at the top of screen

Important: You may need restart your computer after enabling Eye Control. The feature may not work properly without a restart sometimes.
Known Issues with Beta Driver:
  • May crash on startup with newer Windows builds
  • Compatibility issues with some Windows updates
  • No official support from Tobii — driver is discontinued

If you experience problems: Switch to Tab 1 (OptiKey) for a stable experience.

Setup Complete! You now have: Beta Driver v5.0.0.6035 and Windows Eye Control enabled. Use the Eye Control launchpad for keyboard, mouse, and navigation.

Good option for Windows Eye Control — used by many PALS.

Discontinued: Tobii no longer sells the Eye Tracker 4C. You will need to purchase a used unit from eBay or other second-hand marketplaces.

Connect Tobii Eye Tracker 4C

  • Attach the Tobii 4C to the bottom center of your monitor using the magnetic strip or double-sided tape
  • Plug into USB 3.0 port
  • Wait for Windows to detect the device

Verify Tobii Service is Running:

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc
  • Find "Tobii Service" → should show "Running"
